The library is practically empty. There is no one in the football stadium. Classrooms are half empty.

The good times of the Slightly Stoopid show were cut short on Saturday when UFPD shut down the show due to numerous injuries. While these things happen at concerts all the time, the University of Florida was not looking to take any chances. The last thing they want is to have to deal with the PR mess that would come about with a bunch of students getting seriously injured or worse.
Despite having to be cut short, the concert was a huge success and over 12,000 people attended from all over the state. I kid you not, only about 10% of the people I talked to actually went to UF. The rest were from Orlando, Tampa, Tallahassee, and even as far away as Athens, GA.
I was able to get a bunch of pictures of people having a great time at the concert while it lasted. Feel free to download your photos and share it with friends as you please. To see some more photos and videos from the show check out http://gville.info.

Last night was Fat Tuesday, so where else in Gainesville would we be but FAT TUESDAY?? The beads were flying, the hand grenades and daiquiris were flowing, and everyone was having a good time. The place was packed with patrons in purple, green and gold, and for one night this little bar in downtown Gainesville was feeling a lot like Bourbon Street. Mardi Gras is all about the celebration and there was no shortage of celebrating last night. So if you’ve always thought that Gainesville really doesn’t have a good place for Mardi Gras, come to Fat Tuesday next year and you’ll surely be proven wrong.

Sunday was the AM/FM Music Showcase at :08 Bar in Gainesville. Nine solid hours of local music bathed downtown Gainesville in both celebration of music and hope of relief to the earthquake victims of Haiti. The CitiSync crew helped out with some of the event’s promotion and spent most of Sunday enjoying the show. All of the sets put on a really good show and showed the high level of musical talent in Gainesville. We saw a lot of cool things and met a lot of interesting people. Check out pictures!!

We all know Midtown Gainesville has beer, loud music, and plenty of opportunities for midnight debauchery, but sometimes the college co-ed in all of us needs a break from the stereotypical.
Tim and Terry’s Music and More, a local bar and music venue located a block away from campus on 1st Ave., provides for anyone looking for local music, interesting people and good food the break from the Midtown scene they seek.
Tim and Terry’s isn’t your typical bar. What was once probably someone’s very purple personal residence has been changed into a place for those with interest in the Gainesville specific. Some could argue that the place with the most excitement (when the music isn’t playing) is the Purple Porch out front, where people have the opportunity to sit and talk (or sing as was the case for many of the bar’s patrons) while enjoying a beer. The immediate inside includes a bar with beer on tap and absolutely delicious sandwiches hot off the Panini press. For those in the mood for something different, the wall of refrigerated specialty beers and drinks will make sure no one gets bored with what Tim and Terry’s has to offer.
Of course, the best reason to hit up Tim and Terry’s is for the live music. Even though the venue is small, the music can be heard from outside and around the bar, so that listening is never uncomfortable and always enjoyable. The music ranges from experimental, to indie, to trip-hop, to jazz, to pure noise, and those more interested in making music can visit the music store for all their music making needs. For sure, one of the best ways to get to know the real Gainesville is simply by listening to its music at Tim and Terry’s.
If the band playing on a particular night doesn’t fit your style, Tim and Terry’s still merits a visit for the sole reason of talking to the other people bound to be in attendance. Interesting conversation with even more interesting people is a must.
Time and Terry’s always has something going on for those with open ears and an empty stomach. Check out www.citisync.com to find out what’s coming to the Purple Porch soon.

Time and time again music has proven to be a universal healing mechanism. Singing or listening to a song connects you to your feelings, your friends, or memories. The music you like opens and soothes the mind. Music bridges different groups of people by providing a common enjoyment. With the happiness and connectivity of music in mind, the AM/FM Music Festival was created. The festival aims for everyone to have a good time listening to good music while also helping others. Formed by a few members of the band the Footlights, the festival will showcase local talent and benefit the rescue work in Haiti. 8 Seconds bar will house the free event and all donations received will go to Haiti’s much needed earthquake relief fund.
While the cause is great, the music is just as good. A thirteen act deep line-up will ensure that there will be bands that appeal to many different audiences. CitiSync’s friends Plaxico via Mexico and Moodhosa have been staple acts in the Gainesville area for the last few years and will undoubtedly put on solid rock acts. Another band I personally am excited for is Dr. Chrome and the Soulbones. I had a chance to see Dr. Chrome last year and it was quite the entertaining set, they kept me on my toes with quick melodic switches from rock to country to reggae, being musically ADD I thoroughly enjoyed their variety. While I haven’t had a chance to see any of the other bands live, I wandered through their MySpaces and really liked all of the music I found. Sonically, these bands are all over the map, some are a bit hardcore, some are folksy, some punk; consequently, I really think anyone from indie hipster to doom metal thrasher can appreciate the quality of music showcased at AM/FM.
The festival is a great way to check out the local music scene in Gainesville, connect through music, and really try to make a difference for the countless struggling in Haiti. I really urge everyone to grab a few friends and come out and support the AM/FM Music Festival, the bands, and most importantly, its cause.
The AM/FM Festival is located at 8 Seconds in Gainesville, Florida (201 W University Ave). The show is on January 31st and starts at 1:30 p.m., and the line-up is as follows:
Dave Jacobson 1:35-1:55
TJ Masters 2:00-2:20
Michael J 2:25-2:45
Ancient River 2:50-3:20
Michael Claytor & His Friends 3:35-4:05

The last Gainesville saw of punk rock band Bayside, was lead singer Anthony Raneri’s solo appearance at 1982 bar this summer. This acoustic set sent rumors swirling about a possible break-up of the band. Consequently, local Bayside fans blew a simultaneous sigh of relief when the Raneri and his band mates took the stage in UF’s Rion Ballroom a few weeks ago.
Eased into the crowd with openings by area bands Away With You and All Your Friends are Dead, and fresh off a brief North American tour with Bouncing Souls, Bayside played this free show presented by RUB to a crowd of about 150 students.
Amongst the anxious fans was the CitiSync staff, snapping pictures and socializing with spectators and band members alike. After a bit of a speed bump getting our camera through security, we made it into show with full media rights and took a ton of pictures.
Away With You and Ocala’s All Your Friends are Dead opened with surprisingly good sets. Technical playing and strong vocals by both bands got the crowd moving, even prompting a spontaneous mosh pit by some of the more excited fans. The mosh session gave way to some unique dance moves that were captured by CitiSync photographers (these interesting photos can be seen on our FaceBook fan page at http://ow.ly/F4yc).
After the opening acts came the main event, the moment the crowd had been waiting for, Bayside. The band rushed the stage bathed in an uproarious cheer from the enthusiastic fans. They played well beyond the expectations of this writer/fan, treating us to favorites like “Devotion and Desire,” “Duality,” and “Winter,” as well as surprising us with a few unreleased tracks. By comparison they actual improved from the last time I saw them (House of Blues with New Found Glory last Spring). And even after Raneri’s solo stint; it seemed sonically like they hadn’t missed a beat and certainly left the fans happy.
All and all the show was a lot of fun; RUB deserves a lot of praise for putting on such a good event. The CitiSync staff certainly had a good time, and we’ll be sure post any events like this on our “What’s Happening Page” so be sure to check it out at http://citisync.com/happen

Paxico via Mexico will be having an EP release concert at Common Grounds on Saturday, November 21. Moodhosa and Maida Vale will also be playing at the show. I had the opportunity to sit down with Ricky and Tony from Paxico via Mexico and Jose, Jason and Drew from Moodhosa to talk to them about their bands and the show.
Paxico via Mexico started playing music together about two years ago. Ricky had been writing music for some time and asked some of his friends if they wanted to start putting music behind his songs. The guys started playing together and did their first show after practicing together for two weeks. Ricky and another band member, John, are now the creative forces behind the songwriting.
Paxico via Mexico describes their music as “fun-loving indie soul pop that makes you wanna drive your car,” Ricky said. They like their music to tread the line between smart pop and a deeper folk/indie vibe. The band currently consists of Ricky, Tony, Daniel, Jared, Stacie and John.
Jason and Jose of Moodhosa met through a mutual friend who had suggested that they play music together about two years ago. They jammed a few times, but they were both too busy to keep it going. A few months later they tried again, and the second time proved to be the charm. They found common ground in the blues, and their music just seemed to work. They booked their first show before they had a band together, and they ended up playing the show with just a drummer, Jose and Jason.
Since their first show, Moodhosa has been constantly evolving, with different band members coming and going. Band members have the opportunity to contribute their own input and flavor. “We want to be the kind of band that just continues to grow and continues to change,” Jose said. He described the style of Moodhosa’s music as being “roots-based rock and roll with a side of soul.” The band’s roster currently includes Jose, Jason, Drew, and Ashley.
Everyone will have the opportunity to watch these bands share the stage, along with Maida Vale, at Paxico via Mexico’s EP release concert. The show came about because Paxico via Mexico has been working on their album for about six to seven months, and they thought the album would be done by now. Unfortunately, the album isn’t completed yet, so they’ve decided to release an entirely separate EP instead for free.
The show should prove to be brilliant because of the connection between the bands and their music. “All the bands playing will complement each other well,” Tony said. The bands are all friends and have a lot of common ground in their music. Also, the bands are all professional in their manner and give their fans and followers 110 percent of themselves. “Everyone involved is very dedicated to their craft,” Drew said. Jose went on to say, “If you want to see what the Gainesville local music scene is all about, this is the show to go to.”
The doors open at Common Grounds at 9 p.m. on Saturday, and it costs $7 if your 21 and up and $9 if your under 21. Paxico via Mexico will be giving out approximately 200 to 300 copies of their EP. It seems like it’s going to be an awesome show, and I’m very excited to see it.

See you at the concert!

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, I went to the Jon Lash CD release/farewell party at Market Street Pub in downtown. It was a new and exciting experience for me because not only had I never been to the Market Street Pub, but I had never gone to see a local band perform in Gainesville!
I first heard about the concert from Zach Colley, who was one of the people I had met at the Gville TweetUp hosted by CitiSync at 101 Cantina on Oct. 27. Later, I saw the event on the “What’s Happening” page on the CitiSync Web site, and so I decided to go to the concert with my roommate, Kellie, and the founder of CitiSync, Adam. We all had a really good time and enjoyed the music so much that we bought CDs.
The first band to perform was a group of three guys from Orlando called Built to be Broken. They’re genre was alternative rock with a Dashboard Confessional vibe. They had rousing lyrics and gave a refreshing performance. Later on in the night, I had the opportunity to meet the guys and even get a picture with them, which was posted to the CitiSync facebook fan page at facebook.com/citisync, along with all the other pictures we took at the event.
Acoustic artist Mandy Burgan performed after Built to be Broken. She had a Corinne Bailey Rae/Sheryl Crow vibe to most of her music, but she also sang an entertaining cover of “Buy U a Drink” by T-Pain. Mike Patz from First Assembly also took the stage.
Before the Jon Lash Band performed, there was a product toss and a raffle where they gave away a music bag, a snare bag and an electric guitar.
When the Jon Lash Band came on the stage, it became clear that they have a solid, devoted following. Many of the people were very familiar with all the songs and sang along with Jon Lash. It was one of Lash’s last performances before leaving for an internship in Canada.
Lash was an inspiring performer who seemed like a very happy, fun guy. He’s very creative with his music and even did some rapping in his songs. The Jon Lash Band performed both Christian and alternative rock songs with a John Mayer, or at times Shifty, style. One of my personal favorites was one of Lash’s original songs, “Get a Mac.”
The night was a lot of fun, and I definitely plan on attending more local performances that I find on the CitiSync “What’s Happening” page at citisync.com/happening.
